Civil society organizations in North Macedonia are operating in an increasingly complex environment. Challenges related to shrinking civic space, financial instability, disinformation, digital security risks, limited institutional capacities, and rapid technological change continue to affect the work of organizations, activists, and informal civic initiatives.
The country report on North Macedonia takes a closer look at these challenges and examines what civil society actors need to continue their work, strengthen their organizations, and respond to emerging social, political, and technological developments in a practical and sustainable manner.
The report was developed as part of the Regional Support Mechanism EECA project, implemented by Metamorphosis Foundation and TechSoup, in partnership with CIVICUS and within the Digital Democracy Initiative (DDI), that covers the Global South.
The research focuses on key areas affecting the development and resilience of civil society in North Macedonia, including civic space, organizational and financial sustainability, communication capacities, digital inclusion, digital security, countering disinformation, the adoption of artificial intelligence, and emerging opportunities for civic engagement and cooperation.
The findings are based on desk research and semi-structured interviews with civil society representatives, activists, researchers, experts, and practitioners working in North Macedonia. Their experiences provide insight into the everyday challenges faced by civil society, as well as the capacities, partnerships, and support mechanisms needed to address them.
The report highlights the specific circumstances in which civil society organizations in North Macedonia operate and identifies their most pressing needs. It also points to existing sources of resilience, including cooperation between organizations, youth-led civic action, informal networks, digital tools and practices, innovative communication approaches, and stronger engagement with local communities.
The findings and recommendations presented in the report will inform the next activities implemented in North Macedonia within the Regional Support Mechanism EECA project. They will help ensure that future support is responsive to the actual needs of civil society actors and contributes to stronger, more sustainable, secure, and resilient organizations.
